Wednesday’s Words

Posted by admin on 6th February 2013

real Wednesdays Words

Please tell me other people have this problem? There have been a lot of things on my mind when I found out we were pregnant. All the “what if’s” just starting to pile on and on and on..making me stress out. I have somehow developed a permanent right eye twitch. I was already a stress case before I found out and now I feel as though I have become even MORE of a stress case. I’ve talked with many of my friends who have already had kids and their go to line for me is, “You always find a way to make it work.” So, I try and keep that in the back of my mind until something I think about scares me and makes my wheels start spinning and my eye twitch racing. I found this online one day and thought it fit perfectly into how I think. My poor husband has had to reassure me I don’t know how many times and I have had to try to learn how to cope with my stress, for my health and the health of our baby. With all of that being said..I hope that everyone has a stress free Wednesday! Look at it this way..its almost the weekend!!

Room Inspiration: Globes

Sorry I can’t remember where I pulled this image

Lately, I have been sort of obsessed with Globes. Remember as a kid having one of them in your classroom just collecting dust? Well, at least ours did. I find the look of a globe so elementary, but yet so fun at the same time. I have been seeing many people starting to accessorize their small spaces with these great nostalgic items. I love it!

I think for the babies room I want to add a little globe so she can start to imagine all of the places she will visit! I hope you all have a great Tuesday!

Mentoring Monday: Hello Lucky Letterpress

Name :Eunice Moyle

Hometown: Hmm – tough call – born in Silver Springs, Maryland but grew up all over South East Asia and Africa. San Francisco feels like my hometown now.

Turn Ons: Great design and illustration, a really amazing baguette, cheese, Europe (France particularly, but I love the European lifestyle in general), traveling, people with can-do attitudes, adventures.

Turn Offs : Rude, mean people, mediocre design, poorly executed illustration, purple most of the time (but not always!), the fonts Papyrus and Curlz, guilt, lousy attitudes.

Favorite Color: Turquoise is a tried and true – but my tastes change all the time – right now dove grey, combined with muted dusty pinks, sea foams and mustard-y yellows and neons (I’m a child of the 80′s, what can I say, I’m so loving that neon is back!)

Favorite place you have traveled to: France – I love France, I try to go there whenever I can – Paris in the fall, the south anytime.

Favorite Albums: Tough call – it changes all the time! Some with staying power: Pretty much anything by the Beatles, though I particularly love the White Album, Arcade Fire – Funeral (they are the most amazing band live), Coeur de Pirate, and Hayes Carll – Flowers & Liquor. Right now I spend a lot of time singing with Jude (my two year old son) – current favorites are the Weepies, Kanye West, Jessie J, and Plastic Bertrand – Ça Plane Pour Moi (with accompanying 80′s metal style head banging).

What Inspires You: My son Jude and Sabrina’s kids, James & Alex – they are real characters and the things they are into / do are great fodder for card concepts, party ideas, and all sorts of general hilarity. And right now I’m really into French/Japanese children’s clothing, textiles and interior design – greys, dusty pastels, organic textures, stars, splashes of neon, naive doodles…

3 Mentoring Monday: Hello Lucky Letterpress

How did you get your start: I initially fell in love with letterpress printing after taking a class at the San Francisco Center for the Book. At the time I was working as a web designer, and loved the idea of going back to a tactile print medium. I printed a few cards on a whim and sent them to Kate’s Paperie in New York, which placed an order. Sabrina had just graduated from business school and offered to help turn the project into a business, and it took off from there.

What is your favorite design you had created: Probably our father’s day bbq card with anthropomorphic food ( My favorite moment was when one of our employees, Kelly, called me from the bus to say “oh oh oh! what if the corn is shucking off his husk like he’s pulling down his pants?” (this said with accompanying hand gesture and weird looks from fellow bus riders. I also really enjoy the spork playing croquet with the fork and the knife and the ice cream cone licking himself…it makes me chuckle every time.

Who do you want to work with: I love collaborating with other artists – Carson Ellis or Grady McFerrin both of them are just amazing. Anne Benjamin, Camilla Engman, the list is miles long!

What part of your job do you find most challenging: Staying fresh and creative while keeping up with the demands of our customers and fans. We operate in tough, competitive industry. Anyone can decide to be a card designer and lots of people dream of starting their own creative business. Not to mention, there are a large corporations with deep pockets that can out-do small studios like ours in terms of product variety, lower prices, and making it super easy to order online, which has become critical as people get used to the instant gratification of the websites and apps we use every day. It’s hard to keep up with all these demands while continuing to develop our unique design perspective – which is, after all, one of the things that people love about us!

Any Advice for anyone who is just starting out in a career path similar to yours : It would probably be to slow down and stay small. There is a lot of pressure as a business to grow and to rush to keep up with the competition and the changing environment. Don’t stray too far from what you love and remember that small is beautiful too.

Thank you so much to Eunice for taking part. I am just so fond of Hello Lucky’s work. They have recently launched a DIY section on their blog with letterpress printables, free signs, and pattern paper for brides who want to DIY more of their weddings. There are many great crafts on their blog as well, so head on over to check it out!

MENTORINGMONDAY Mentoring Monday: Zoe from Ladybird Likes

ladybirdlikes Mentoring Monday: Zoe from Ladybird Likes

Name: Zoe Jade

Hometown: I’m a London girl through and through

Turn ons: At the moment I’m loving film photography, my ipad, chocolate covered pretzels, fabric shopping, 90s inspired fashion, and car boot sales.

Turn offs: I dislike rudeness, people who walk unnecessarily slowly, cold tea, being stuck inside when it’s sunny outside, running out of printer ink when I’m in the middle of printing something important.

Favorite color: I have a lot of love for black and white, especially in clothes. I also love mint green in a major way – it’s such the perfect summery colour. My colour choices depend a lot on the season though. As we are getting nearer to Autumn I’m leaning towards browns and mustard yellows more and more.

Favorite place you have traveled to: I am totally obsessed with America, in particular New York City. If I had to pick somewhere other than London to live it would definitely be NYC. It’s such an inspiring place.

Favorite albums: I listen to music all day everyday pretty much and am always looking for new artists to listen to – my go to albums are ‘Romance Is Boring’ by Los Campesinos! or ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac. They make me work harder for some reason!

What inspires you?
Everything. Old movies, magazines, shop window displays, blogs, my friends, junk shops…. I try not to limit myself and am forever ripping pictures out of magazines, and hoarding pretty packaging and scraps of fabric that I like. I try to surround myself with pretty things and hope that they will help me to create pretty things!

How did you get your start? My Nan passed away at the start of 2011 – she lived with me and my family, so after she died her room sat empty. It became just sort of a junk room for a while as we didn’t know what to do with it and it felt weird to move her things out. I’d been wanting to start my own business for several years, and so my parents said I should turn my Nan’s room into a studio to work from. I did, and ended up starting up Ladybird Likes in February 2012. I haven’t looked back since!

What is your favorite design you have created? I love the pin up girl brooches – I have about 6 of them which I swap over on my cardigans! They always get so many compliments whenever I wear them, and I think they sum up the Ladybird Likes brand pretty well too.

girls Mentoring Monday: Zoe from Ladybird Likes

Who do you want to work with? I’d love to work with the photographer Tim Walker (he is my total hero) or with one of my blogger crushes like Elsie Larson of A Beautiful Mess.

What part of your job do you find most challenging?
I actually find most parts of my job pretty challenging! As I only started my business in February the last six months have been probably the steepest learning curve of my life. I’ve had to learn everything from product photography to accounting, and I’ve had to learn it quickly. I pretty much jumped in at the deep end, but even if I could go back in time I wouldn’t do it any other way.

What part of being a small business owner do you find challenging? I am really awful at managing my time. I will spend hours on a task that is relatively unimportant, then end up having to complete something really important in an hour! I also suck at making decisions – I like to mull things over, research them, get other people’s opinions, but I’ve had to make split second decisions on more than one occasion, and it’s stressed me out a lot!

Any Advice for anyone who is just starting out in a career path similar to yours? Go for it! Put everything you have into what you make, be true to your dream and your vision, work hard, have fun, and be nice to everyone you meet even if they aren’t nice to you. Everything else you will learn along the way.

Thank You Zoe for taking part! If you want to see more on Zoe and Ladybird Likes head on over to her pages!!

I hope you all have a great Monday!

Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

SCHWARTZ 353 Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

Wow! A year has passed already! It has been such an incredible year with the most amazing man I know! When I use to hear the term, “marry your best friend,” I never really thought that would happen to me. 10 years ago, I met that man and now we are married. This has been such a crazy and amazing 1st year together. I am so blessed and thankful for the life that we have made together. I thank God everyday for bringing him back into my life. Happy Anniversary Babe!! With that being said, we decided to head to Austin for our anniversary! We’ve both heard how amazing the city was, and they were right!! This place was AMAZING!!!!

IMG 2433 Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

If you follow my Instagram then you’ve seen most of these photos, but we arrived last Thursday and I can’t even tell you how excited we both were! Thursday we spent the day walking around by our hotel to get a feel for where we were and that night we headed to Foreign and Domestic for dinner! If you ever get the chance to head to Austin you HAVE to check this food out! Holy mouth water it was amazing. Its kind of off the beaten path but it is well worth the trip over there.

yum Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

The next day we headed out to Franklin’s BBQ, but missed it by 10 mins! Apparently you need to get there before 11 when it opens. The line was out the door and they told us we could wait but it would be 2 hours and we weren’t even guaranteed food. Ha! So, yeah we left after that.

IMG 2446 Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

We explored the city for most of the day and wandered around the SOCO District right by our hotel. This place was so cool, with lots of vintage shops, antique stores and great food. Food trucks were a huge part of Austin, in the SOCO District there was a street that was just full of Food Trucks. It was pretty fun hanging around there all day.

score Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

We walked along this street for most of the day and I scored the Best gift ever..I got my antlers! Sadly, they are still sitting in the Austin airport at Jet Blue waiting for a Fed Ex number to be shipped out to us. So, lesson learned don’t tell Jet Blue you have horns in your bags or they won’t let you fly!

BATS Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

So there is a bridge that was right next to our hotel called Avenue of the Bats. This bridge is known to have 2 million..that’s right..MILLION bats living under it. One of the things to do while in Austin is see this amazing spectacle at night! I will warn you, if you stand on the bridge they start to fly up at you and let me tell you that was not fun to witness! haha!

IMG 2479 Happy 1st Anniversary with a trip to Austin!!

We ended our trip by heading to a famous mural that is in Austin. It was the best way to end our trip. Austin, you will be missed but until next time! And Happy 1st Anniversary to the most amazing man ever!!!! Love you!!!
